The Gold Standard for Measuring Calories.
The human body is a machine. To carry out its vital functions, it has to perform work. For this, the body requires energy. Like other engines, the body does this by consuming fuel (food). As we burn these fuels, we create heat. Since our bodies like to stay at 98.6°, our skin acts like a radiator and sheds the majority of this heat to the environment. This heat is also known as calories.
The most accurate method for measuring calories is by Direct Calorimetry, which is the measurement of heat given off from the body. Until now, the only way to measure body heat has been to place you in a special, sealed room called a room direct calorimeter. These rooms have been used since the early 1800’s to measure metabolism.
Scientists have tried for decades to devise a way to create portable devices to measure calories using direct calorimetry. The largest stumbling block has been a method to accurately capture heat generated when we sweat, also known as evaporative heat loss. Sweating is a very efficient way for the body to quickly rid itself of excess heat.
MetaLogics’ patented DirectCAL™ system is capable of capturing evaporative heat, providing the breakthrough necessary to make an accurate portable Direct Calorimetry device.
